Guide to Camping in New Zealand
Many adventurous people visit the beautiful country of New Zealand every year to take in the amazing scenery. One of the best ways to experience all that New Zealand has to offer is by trekking one of the many well known routes that can be found on both the North and South Islands. Of course like with any trip abroad you want to come prepared for the worst while expecting the best.
Whilst you can’t influence what the weather or terrain is going to be like once you touch down in New Zealand one thing you can influence is what you bring with you. The decision of what to pack always comes down to taking the all the necessities you need without adding extra weight with unnecessary items.
If you do plan to trek some of the beautiful track, such as the Milford Track located in Milford Sound National Park, then you will want to ensure you bring the correct camping equipment. First off you will need to take the correct outdoor clothing with you. The most important to take in your rucksack, which is of course the most important item, are a good quality waterproof jacket, some sort of thermal clothing, windproof trousers, some gloves, a hat and naturally a decent pair of hiking shoes.
On top of this you will need a high quality sleeping bag because even though it can be warm during the day certain parts of New Zealand get very cold when night sets in. A tent is another necessity if there are no lodges for you to stay at along the route. A water carrier and a small stove to cook food will also be very handy to keep your energy levels up whilst on the move.
There is plenty for all sorts of adventurous travellers to experience in New Zealand. This country located in the Pacific Ocean really does have it all from rugged mountains covered with lush green vegetation right down to the beautiful and picturesque sandy beaches. The Islands are great for walking, camping, biking and a multitude of water sports during the summer months. When winter hits you will be able to take up skiing or snowboards to keep yourself fit and active

Chrisp,
Did you actually do the Milford Track? What time of year were you camping in NZ? I would like to do a tramp like the Milford track or Hump track, but I am hitting the South Island in October and it just isn’t safe to go out there, especially with my 7 year old daughter, no matter how competent she is in the outdoors.
We will be doing the Tongariro Crossing however. And some short day hikes in Abel Tasman.
